A Dalton Education

The Dalton Plan

“The aim of education should be to teach us how to think rather than what to think.”

The Dalton Plan at DSHK: Leading with Independence

The Dalton Plan at Dalton School Hong Kong (DSHK) is more than an educational framework; it is a transformative philosophy that empowers students to take control of their learning journey. Developed by progressive educator Helen Parkhurst, the Dalton Plan is built on four core pillars—House, Assignment, Lesson, and Lab—each offering a distinct approach to student development. While teachers provide scaffolding, planning, and guidance throughout the learning process, students are encouraged to “lead, not be led.” This approach equips Dalton students with the confidence, passion, and skills they need to pursue their interests, believing they can achieve anything they set their minds to.

In our Glocal Stream, we adapt the Dalton Plan to balance the rigorous requirements of the local curriculum while embracing its progressive elements. The Lesson and House systems remain central, while Assignments and Lab activities are integrated in smaller doses. This ensures that students meet local academic standards without sacrificing the innovative spirit of the Dalton Plan. As we continue to refine this stream in collaboration with educators, our goal is to positively influence the local educational landscape and create a future-ready environment for Hong Kong students.

In both the Glocal and International Streams, we are dedicated to upholding the core principles of the Dalton Plan. These principles are aligned with the Mission, Vision, and Key Beliefs of DSHK, ensuring that all students receive a progressive education that prepares them to lead and make a meaningful impact.

House System: Building Community and Character

The House system at DSHK plays a fundamental role in fostering a strong sense of community and belonging. Upon enrollment, every student is placed into one of four Houses, which bring together students of different ages and integrate both local and international streams. Led by student and faculty captains, these Houses participate in inter-house competitions and collaborative activities that build school spirit and nurture well-rounded individuals who embody the school’s values.

"Strength in Unity, Growth in Diversity"

Assignment: Personalized Pathways to Success

Assignments at DSHK are thoughtfully designed multidisciplinary projects that challenge students both academically and personally. Each Assignment helps students achieve curriculum goals while developing essential skills such as time management, creativity, and critical thinking. These projects provide personalized learning pathways, ensuring that students understand the expectations and can apply their knowledge in real-world contexts during Lab time.

"Guided by Goals, Driven by Curiosity"

Lesson: Where Learning Begins

The Lesson is a cornerstone of the Dalton Plan. At DSHK, Lessons are meticulously prepared, delivered, and led by our dedicated teachers. These stimulating sessions are conducted by both House and specialist teachers, who guide students through the essential elements needed to complete their Assignments and explore additional curriculum topics.

"Leaders in the Classroom, Leaders in Life"

Lab: Exploring Passions, Expanding Horizons

Lab time provides students with "freedom within a frame," allowing them to explore personal interests through elective classes and projects. Whether delving into design technology, home economics, foreign languages, or pursuing personal projects like podcasting or coding, Lab time is where students can fully engage their passions. This period fosters collaboration, autonomy, and critical thinking, with teachers serving as guides in small group or individual settings.

Core Dalton Principles:
The Foundation of Success

At DSHK, students draw on the four key principles of the Dalton Plan to manage their academic and personal development effectively:

  • Independence: Students develop the ability to make decisions for themselves and the motivation to complete tasks autonomously. This independence equips them for lifelong learning and skill development beyond school.
  • Collaboration: Students learn the value of teamwork and respectful relationships, working together for the success of the group. When the group thrives, everyone thrives.
  • Responsibility: Students take ownership of their personal, social, and intellectual decisions, fostering self-efficacy and active involvement in shaping their educational journey.
  • Reflection: By reflecting on feedback, students gain the confidence to assess what they know and determine their next steps. This continuous cycle of development is essential for their growth.

This approach seamlessly integrates with our school values of Benevolence, Propriety, Virtue, Wisdom, and Trustworthiness. At DSHK, students are encouraged to take the lead in their learning, fully embodying our motto: “I am not led, I lead.” At the same time, we prioritize the wellbeing of each student, ensuring they thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
