Inspiring Future Thinkers: A Visit from Professor Po-Shen Loh

DSHK recently had the privilege of hosting Professor Po-Shen Loh, a renowned educator and mathematician who inspired students, teachers, and parents alike. His visit ignited curiosity and creativity across our community.

Engaging Problem-Solving Activities
Professor Loh engaged our 4th to 7th graders in a series of exciting problem-solving tasks that encouraged critical thinking and discourse. These activities were designed to be both challenging and enjoyable, allowing students to collaborate and explore various strategies. The enthusiasm in the room was palpable as students tackled complex problems, realizing that the journey of discovery is often just as important as the solution itself.

Fostering “Thought Full” Students
In addition to working with students, Professor Loh held discussions with teachers and parents about the concept of becoming “thought full.” He challenged us to consider how schools can cultivate students who go beyond being “book smart.” His emphasis on the importance of valuing the art of “delighting others” resonated deeply, urging society to rethink educational practices and priorities.

A Mission for a Compassionate Future
Professor Loh is on a mission to inspire students to use their knowledge and talents to connect with and support others. In an era dominated by AI and technology, he emphasized the crucial role of our humanity and our ability to care for one another. As we navigate the complexities of the modern world, these qualities will be essential for creating a smarter and more compassionate society.

In many ways Professor Loh’s visit affirmed the mission of Dalton while also challenging us to reflect on how we can better support our students in becoming thoughtful, engaged citizens who are equipped to make a positive impact in the world. We are grateful for his insights and look forward to implementing his ideas in our educational journey.
